SPSCC is proud to announce student-athlete Dakota Seddon as its nomination for the Washington State Association of College Trustees (ACT) Transforming Lives Awards. As an award recipient, Dakota received a financial award of $250 from the ACT.

Dakota came to SPSCC in the fall of 2019 after health issues made his dream of enlisting in the Air Force unlikely. He decided to reach out to coach and educational and career planner Juan P. Murillo about playing soccer at SPSCC and, shortly after enrolling, Dakota found a different dream.

Dakota credits conversations with Coach Murillo and athletic director Vernell Willingham with helping him build the confidence to create change in the SPSCC community and become captain of the men’s soccer team. He’s creating that change through a pursuit of academic excellence, holding his teammates accountable to an academic high standard, and offering help to other student-athletes.

Each year, the board of trustees from each of the Washington State community and technical colleges accepts nominations from staff and faculty for students whose lives were transformed by attending a community or technical college. Dakota Seddon’s story was chosen from among five top nominations put forth by SPSCC staff and faculty in fall 2020.
