Hagoromo Film program collaborations continue with “A Tale of Two Cities”

Wednesday, May 29, 2019

SPSCC film students recently unveiled “A Tale of Two Cities”, a product of an ongoing cross-cultural film and media partnership between the college and Japan’s Hagoromo International University. The film – a travelogue produced by students, faculty, and staff from both institutions – provided students with real-world work opportunities in the field of video production as they explored the local sights of the schools’ home cities, Olympia and Osaka.

The cross-cultural film collaboration began as an outgrowth of SPSCC’s existing Study Abroad programs. Each summer, SPSCC professor Aki Suzuki would teach a Japanese language course that included a weeks-long stay in Japan, and a class from Hagoromo would do the same, visiting the United States. These exchanges brought together film faculty from both institutions and film students began to join these exchanges, as well, with a focus on compiling footage from home and abroad. Students then worked with their Japanese counterparts to include productions that transcend language and culture, including “2018 Japan Study Abroad SPSCC / Hagoromo” and “Heart to Heart, One World to Another”.
