SPSCC today kicked off its 2021-22 academic year, welcoming six new full-time tenure-track faculty members to the college.
Jason Barnett, Mathematics Professor
Barnett received his Master of Science degree in Applied Mathematics from University of California Davis and his Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and Bachelor of Music degree in Instrumental Performance from California State University, Stanislaus.
When he’s not reading, Barnett likes to hike, bike, roller blade, bake, and play video and board games. “When you (virtually) see me around and have an hour or two to spare, ask me about my cats,” he told us.
Ellen Chai, Biology Professor
Chai received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from University of California Los Angeles and her Master of Science degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from University of California Riverside. Chai has worked part time for the college since January 2020.
Outside of work, Chai enjoys spending time with family, studying new subjects, tending to her garden, and observing wildflowers and plants. “I enjoy developing creative and engaging curriculum for students interested in science, and look forward to mentoring pre-health professional students to achieve their academic and career goals.”
Dr. Chelsea L. Gustafson, Chemistry Professor - Craft Brewing & Distilling
Gustafson received her Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Southern Oregon University and her Doctor of Philosophy degree in Chemistry from University of California, Santa Cruz.
Gustafson has a background at a small biotech company using cell biology and analytical chemistry to study potential drug candidates, and loves talking about her graduate school work focused on the molecular mechanism of mammalian circadian rhythms. In her free time, Gustafson enjoys gardening, hiking, biking, paddle boarding, and spending time with her family.
Dr. Travis Knowles, Chemistry Professor
Knowles received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from Southern Adventist University, his Master of Arts degree in Chemistry from University of Denver and his Doctor of Philosophy degree in Chemical Education from University of Northern Colorado.
His goal as a chemistry educator is to show students the importance of chemistry in their everyday lives so they can grow to love it as much as he does. Knowles’ hobbies include traveling, cooking, watching football, and reading.
Rebecca “Joy” Platter, Cybersecurity & Computer Network Administration Professor
Patter received her Associate of Applied Science degree in Computer Network Administration and her Associate of Arts degree in General Studies and Pre Nursing from South Puget Sound Community College. She has worked part-time for the college since January 2018.
