Programs at SPSCC maintaining their own, program-specific handbooks must adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Program handbooks should be consistent with current College program requirements, course offerings, and instructional policies as established by Instructional Council
  • Program handbooks will be reviewed by Instructional Council for approval every 3 years, or when there are significant changes, or as required by program accreditation
  • Program handbooks should include the following:
    • The name and description of the program
    • Contact information for the program
    • The years or terms which the handbook covers and revision date
    • A table of contents
    • Descriptions and costs of program-wide tools, uniforms, supplies, and other expenses
    • Program outcomes and performance expectations
    • Certification or licensing information
    • Accreditation information and anything specifically required by the program’s accrediting body
  • Program handbooks may include information on:
    • Safety
    • Sanitation
    • Hygiene
    • Professional standards
    • Other items specific to the program
  • Program handbooks may also point students to supplementary resources including the Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities, pathways maps, syllabi, advising information, and other College policies and procedures
  • Handbooks are not required to repeat syllabus information, College policies or College codes available to students elsewhere unless deemed necessary
  • Submission of handbooks should be accompanied by documentation of any external handbook requirements from accreditors, etc. when applicable.

Program handbooks allow students to independently learn about College offerings, navigate programs and understand expectations. Handbooks should accurately reflect College programs and policies. This policy provides a mechanism for program handbook review and quality assurance.
