PLACEMENT

New students and students returning after an absence of two or more quarters must complete a reading and math CASAS assessments to determine their placement level prior to registering for an ABE or I-BEST English or math course.

If a student has taken a college level entrance exam and places within basic skills levels:

Administer CASAS assessments to determine placement in ABE or I-BEST courses.

If a student has taken a college level entrance exam and places above basic skills levels:

In general, do not administer CASAS assessments in a subject where a student has a college level entrance exam score that documents functioning above basic skills levels (ABE, ESL, and 90 levels) in that subject.

However:

If a student wants to enroll in an ABE course: The student must demonstrate eligibility for ABE levels by taking CASAS assessments and scoring within those levels.

If a student wants to enroll in an I-BEST course: The student must demonstrate eligibility for I-BEST by taking CASAS assessments and scoring within those levels.

Instructor Recommendations:  In the case that a student has taken CASAS assessments and does not meet the minimum eligibility for an ABE course, a student may request instructor permission to enroll in that course based on previous course work or a writing sample.

The following are some examples of how differing skill levels are looked at to determine placement.  Please see additional placement guides: CASAS Score and level correlation, Official NG Cut-Scores, ABE level descriptions, ABE Placement Guide
