Men’s Basketball Achievements
The 2024–25 season was historic for the SPSCC men's basketball team. Under the leadership of Head Coach Zach Smith, the Clippers achieved a 25–7 overall record and 12–2 in conference play, earning them a share of the NWAC West Region title and the #2 seed in the region. They maintained a top-10 NWAC ranking throughout the season and made their first-ever appearance in the NWAC Final Four. In addition to their on-court accolades, they accumulated a team GPA of 3.3, with several players transferring to play at four-year universities.
Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training (I-BEST)
The Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training (I-BEST) teams, led by Dean Jennie Barber, have worked to ensure that I-BEST is available in every academic pathway at SPSCC. I-BEST is a nationally recognized instructional model that allows Transition Studies students to enroll in college-level classes while learning essential reading, writing, speaking, listening, and math skills. Their dedication has made a significant impact on the accessibility and success of students in various academic pathways.
Personal Support Center
In 2024-2025, the Personal Support Center, led by Allie Moser, served over 620 students. More than 200 students received emergency shelter, short-term hotel accommodations, rental assistance, eviction prevention, and other housing stability support. Over 250 students received food support and grocery assistance, in partnership with the Food Pantry, which provides emergency grab-and-go meals and more than 500 student visits per quarter. New in 2024-25, a partnership between the Foundation, IT, and the Personal Support Center distributed 46 refurbished laptops to students, ensuring no student in need of a laptop for coursework was turned away. The Personal Support Center continues to provide a centralized hub on campus for students to access resources for housing, food, transportation, childcare, healthcare, clothing, and case management support services to help them persist in their academic goals.
Arts Faculty & Staff
Our Arts faculty and staff continue to bring fabulous performances, showcase visual art, engage in poetry readings, produce films, and other artistic activity in our community and on our campus. Their dedication to the arts enriches our cultural landscape and provides invaluable experiences for students and the community alike. Their commitment to excellence and creativity is truly commendable.
Clipper Coffee Corner + Hot Grill
The Clipper Coffee Corner and the addition of the hot grill in 2024-25, managed by Lexi Shoblom and Sean Tatum, have been a huge success, providing a community hub for students, faculty, and staff to gather for a hot meal, snack, or beverage. This community space and its offerings have grown significantly in one year, with a 19.7% increase in the average number of customers per day from Fall 2024 to Spring 2025 and a 38.8% increase in daily sales. The menu has been enhanced each quarter based on feedback from the quarterly Student Survey, inclusive of the student voice. The space is a remarkable partnership between students and the college.
Asian American Visibility Team
The Asian American Visibility team started as an employee resource group and has put on a successful film series, hosted learning sessions on campus like a Community of Practice, and Symposium presentations, and represented the college at conferences, both individually and together. Their efforts have significantly contributed to the visibility and inclusion of Asian American voices on campus.
Craft Brewing and Distilling Teams
The Craft Brewing and Distilling teams, consisting of administrators, staff, and faculty from across all units of the college, have worked collaboratively to establish the licensed business, open a tasting room, and distribute our product to local restaurants and bars in Olympia and the surrounding area. Their collaborative efforts have successfully brought this unique program to life, contributing to the local community and providing valuable hands-on experience for students.
Campus Safety / Facilities / IT: Cross-Functional Teamwork
This year showcased the strength and synergy of our Facilities, Campus Safety, and IT teams. Amid leadership transitions, the Facilities team—guided by seasoned staff and capable leads—demonstrated unwavering commitment and adaptability. Their ability to maintain service excellence through change is truly commendable. Campus Safety and Facilities worked in close coordination to uphold a secure, responsive environment, ensuring our community felt supported during uncertain times. Their coordination during emergencies was both timely and reassuring. Meanwhile, the partnership between IT and Facilities remained a cornerstone of operational continuity. From urgent fixes to everyday support, their responsiveness and professionalism ensured that departments stayed equipped and connected. Together, these teams exemplified what cross-functional collaboration can achieve—resilient operations, seamless service, and a campus community that continues to thrive.
Aspen Prize Work
A group of outstanding individuals from across the campus coordinated to write our Aspen Prize application and organize both the Site Visit Team and the Prize Day Celebration. Kati Sagawa and Kelly Green did an incredible job writing the application, joined by Jennifer Tuia, Michelle Andreas, and Dave Pelkey, who described the work over the last several years that made us the 2nd Best Community College in the country. Tammy Berbells and Rhonda Yenney, along with multiple people from across campus, planned the Site Visit and the Prize Day Celebration. Their impeccable work made the entire campus and greater community proud to be part of The Clipper Nation.
