Community StoriesAt the center of SPSCC's Olympia Campus stands the Welcome Figure. Carved from 1,200-year-old fallen sacred cedar, the figure was commissioned by SPSCC’s Associated Student Body in 2005 to acknowledge the rich connections between the college and the Squaxin Island Tribe. Andrea Wilbur-Sigo (Squaxin Island and Skokomish), the artist behind the SPSCC Welcome Figure, reflected on its creation.

Program News | Awards & RecognitionSPSCC is proud to announce its participation in a groundbreaking initiative aimed at developing a climate-ready workforce. Partnering with the Squaxin Island Tribe, SPSCC will utilize its $750,000 plus portion of a $9.3 million grant awarded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to the Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges. This initiative seeks to advance climate resilience across the U.S. by empowering economically disadvantaged communities, people of color, and Indigenous populations.

In the NewsIn May 2024, the SPSCC Dental Assisting Program hosted an open house event attended by over 100 prospective students, alumni, local dentists and clinical staff. Attendees were particularly drawn to the program’s use of new technologies, including state-of-the-art intraoral scanners, such as iTero and Medit i700, and the historic pictures of the program dating back to the 1960s.

Program NewsSPSCC today announced that it has been granted accreditation by the National Alliance of Concurrent Enrollment Partnerships for its College in the High School program. This makes SPSCC the ninth accredited program in Washington State and the sixth accredited among the state's two-year colleges.

In the NewsIn 2018, SPSCC in Olympia, Washington launched the first associate degree program in the United States that focused on craft brewing, distilling and cider making. In comparison to institutes that award certificates upon completion of their programming or colleges that offer Bachelor of Science (BS) degrees designed to teach the science behind these arts, SPSCC’s program includes instruction on the full range of practical skills required to one to open their craft establishment or secure employment as a brewer, distiller or cidermaker.

In the News | Foundation NewsSPSCC staff, faculty and students have a lot to be proud of when it comes to implementing innovative climate solutions to protect ecosystems on more than 100 acres across the college’s campuses. From installing solar panels to help mitigate consumption of nonrenewable energy resources, to adopting safe, pesticide-free landscaping practices that protect watersheds, SPSCC finds innovative ways to continuously evolve its approach to environmental stewardship on campus. These efforts are also reflected in the work faculty are doing to design related curricular activities.

With two decades of experience as a restaurant manager and chef, Keagan studied business administration with the goal of one day owning a business. He slowly realized that it wasn’t the right fit.

YHS has partnered with Intercity Transit on a project that aims to help students learn about using public transportation in a comprehensive way. This initiative happened in collaboration with an existing program that brings YHS students to the manufacturing program at SPSCC in Lacey.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in Anthropology and Creative Writing in 2023. He recently returned to Washington after two years abroad and reflected on his experience starting at SPSCC and his move to a university on the other side of the world.

Student Stories“After I started the automotive program at SPSCC, I got the opportunity to sell the house I had in Tenino. I bought a house down in Arkansas because it’s my calling. I’m originally from the Midwest, I like the slow pace of life, the weather, and I got to be closer to my family,” said Tom Seal. “I sold all my stuff and moved down there. I started looking for automotive programs and there was nothing of the sort like we have here. SPSCC is the only reason I came back to Washington State.”

Event NewsFor many students, their artwork is capable of expressing more about life than words themselves. The ability to create allows them to send a message without ever speaking. Through different mediums, colors, and materials, the student artwork in this year’s exhibit says something about what South Puget Sound Community College (SPSCC) art classes can teach. Every year the art faculty of SPSCC goes through the art students’ completed assignments from a variety of courses and picks out the best of the best to be featured in the annual student art exhibition, open now through June 16, Monday through Friday from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Leonor R. Fuller Gallery.

In the News | Event NewsChances are you’ve marveled at Georges Seurat’s pointillist masterpiece, “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte.” This iconic scene of people strolling along a sunny waterfront with parasols, top hats, curious children and playful puppies is made up of tiny individual dots. These blend into a piece of art that can be found everywhere from coffee table books to picture postcards. It’s also the focal point of the award-winning musical “Sunday in the Park with George” being presented by the South Puget Sound Community College Theatre Collective from May 26 through June 4.

Foundation NewsSPSCC's Veteran & Military Family Resources Center is a welcoming space on campus for students and their families who have served. In recent years, it has gone through a transformation thanks to the participation and collaborative support of student veterans and Veteran Specialist Michelle Erzen. Renovation plans for a larger space are in the works for fall 2023.

Alumni“3D modeling has always been a hobby of mine. It’s something I’ve been doing since I was twelve. It’s always been there, off to the side, and I thought I’d never be able to build that skill into something practical,” said SPSCC alumnus Justin Losey. “At SPSCC, I learned that wasn’t true. That skill was the beginning of my career.”

Foundation News | Program NewsThe Science, Engineering, and Math (SEM) Pathway provides a comprehensive array of programs designed to give students the foundation they need to pursue fields in research, engineering, and much more. Included in the long list of subjects are Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, Environmental Science, Math, and Physics. Courses in this pathway prepare students for a wide range of scientific and technical careers and transfer opportunities to 4-year universities.

Student StoriesMariah Slack is a student at SPSCC pursuing an Associate in Arts. She has a genetic deletion condition known as Williams syndrome (WS). Only 3% of people diagnosed with WS graduate from high school. Of that 3%, only 1% go on to college. Mariah has never let these odds get in the way of continuing her education.
