MacCready grew up in Southern California, moving to the Pacific Northwest in 1987. He studied drawing and sculpture at Yale, receiving a BA in Architecture in 1982. He has been oil painting since 2023 with guidance from Kathy Gore-Fuss. He lives and works in Olympia and has been a Professor at the University of Washington School of Oceanography since 1994.
I paint to capture the beauty of people, moments, and places. This group of paintings is about the land we live on near Olympia, the forest, farm animals, water, and the ever-present old trees.
I have been an avid draftsman my entire life. Drawing is a companion whether I am at home or traveling. The act of drawing, and now painting, gives me a way of slowing down, looking, and feeling connected.
