South Puget Sound Community College (SPSCC) congratulates Clipper Men’s Golfer Luke Fenner for winning the Columbia Basin College (CBC) League Match Tournament on Tuesday, Oct. 1 — a historic first for the SPSCC golf program.

“I don’t know, honestly. I’m more shocked than anything,” said an amazed Fenner when asked about his feelings about his first-place finish in the tournament.

Fenner finished the tournament with a 144 gross score, scoring a 72 for each of the two rounds of the tournament. He had five birdies throughout the two-day tourney, including a clutch birdie on the final hole of the second day to clinch his first-place finish. Fenner finished just one stroke above Jesus Castaneda of CBC and Milo Stover of Bellevue College, who finished tied for second place in the tournament.

Clipper Golf Head Coach, Russell Olsen, spoke highly of Fenner and the growth he has seen from the young golfer, “Luke has committed himself to being the best golfer he can be. He has worked tirelessly on all aspects of his golf game but more importantly, Luke has matured as a competitor. Yesterday shows what can happen when Luke is in full control of his emotions while on the course.  Luke's maturity aligned with his natural ability for the game of golf in the NWAC League tournament this past week, and resulted in a well-deserved victory for Luke and an important milestone for the SPSCC Golf program.”

The Clipper Golf teams also played out to a decent finish overall. The men’s team, carried by Fenner’s strong showing, finished in fifth with a +72 over par performance. Some performances that stood out were freshmen Carter Dorenbosch, who finished tied for 23rd at +16, and Charlie Ancich, finishing tied for 35th place.

It was a notable day for the women’s team as they played in their first-ever league match as a complete squad. Also, freshman Audrey Williams is the first-ever woman golfer in SPSCC history to finish with a score lower than 100, as she finished with a 99 in the second round of the tournament.

Olsen talked about how he hopes this big achievement in SPSCC Golf history can motivate the rest of the squad going forward. “This win will serve as motivation to the rest of our team and shows the commitment the school and community has made to building a winning golf program at SPSCC,” added Olsen. “We are excited for the rest of the 2024-2025 season!”
