South Puget Sound Community College (SPSCC) has recently taken steps toward the launch of its Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science (BS in CS).

The BS in CS program is designed for students who have completed an approved associate-level degree from SPSCC or another accredited institution. It will be offered in an evening and weekend format, which can be completed in two years (six quarters), and students will have the option to start in Fall or Winter Quarter.

Creating a flexible program was a high priority for the college, recognizing the diverse needs of the community.

“We designed this program to be accessible to working, caregiving, and career-change seeking adults,” said Dr. Jason Selwitz, SPSCC’s Dean of Applied Technology.

In creating clear pathways for students, the BS in CS program at SPSCC seamlessly integrates with degrees the college already offers. Associate-level transfer degrees in computer science can serve as feeder programs, including those with new requirements for 30 specific Professional Technical credits in Cybersecurity or Software Development. These would replace the traditional Calculus and Physics requirements which have been barriers to students in the past. Computer science-oriented associate-level transfer degrees, as well as those requiring 30 specific professional-technical credits, provide students with a strong foundation of skills and experience that will allow them to enter the BS in CS program both prepared and confident.

“The bachelor of science degree will prepare students for employment across Washington State and beyond, covering more content and with more depth than a two-year degree can provide,” said Michael Haensel, SPSCC Professor of Computer Information Systems and Computer Science. “We’re excited to offer this new option to students.”

SPSCC developed its curriculum in coordination with Grays Harbor College (GHC). GHC students will be able to complete their BS in CS through SPSCC once they complete an approved associate degree at GHC.

Pending approval from the Northwest Commission on College and Universities, the BS in CS program is expected to launch with an inaugural cohort of 25 to 30 students in Fall 2024. SPSCC remains committed to providing affordable and accessible education while addressing the evolving needs of the workforce in the current technology-driven landscape.
