South Puget Sound Community College (SPSCC) today announced that its proposed Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science (BS in CS) has been approved by the Northwest Commission on College and Universities (NWCCU).
“SPSCC is delighted to start a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science degree program in Fall 2024 in collaboration with Grays Harbor College,” said Dr. Michelle Andreas, SPSCC's Vice President for Instruction. “This program will serve our region’s communities and employers with high demand and high wage employment opportunities in the field of Information Technology.”
The BS in CS program was designed for students who have already completed an approved associate-level degree. The program will be offered in an evening and weekend format, providing flexibility for working professionals and non-traditional students. The program can be completed in two years (six quarters), and students will have the option to start in either Fall or Winter Quarter.
Dr. Jason Selwitz, SPSCC’s Dean of Applied Technology, shared more about the flexible nature of the program: “Recognizing the diverse needs of our community was a high priority for the college. We designed this program to be accessible to working, caregiving, and career-change seeking adults.”
Associate-level transfer degrees in computer science already offered by SPSCC and GHC will serve as feeder programs for the BS in CS program, providing students with a strong foundation of skills and experience.
“The bachelor of science degree will prepare students for employment across Washington State and beyond, covering more content and with more depth than a two-year degree can provide,” said Michael Haensel, SPSCC Professor of Computer Information Systems and Computer Science. “We look forward to the positive impact this program will have on our students, our community, and the broader technology industry.”
