The South Puget Sound Community College (SPSCC) Theatre Collective presents Far Away by Caryl Churchill at the Kenneth J. Minnaert Center for the Arts Black Box from Feb. 24 to March 5, 2023.
Caryl Churchill’s Far Away depicts a dystopian world where everyone and everything is at war. Even aspects of nature, such as the birds in the trees or the river below, can’t be trusted. Joan attempts to navigate this futuristic nightmare, but fear and uncertainty continue to eat away at her.
The cast includes Sara R. Thiessen and Zoey Matthews, as well as SPSCC student Delani Buchanan and SPSCC graduate Julian Owen. SPSCC students Christine Chiang, Dennis Hidalgo, Kasey Johnson, Jack Rogers, and Joey Taylor will appear in the ensemble.
SPSCC graduates Brennan Tucker and Jordanna Averett join the production crew as Stage Manager and Set Designer respectively. Brennan currently works as the Sales & Stewardship Coordinator at Harlequin Productions. Alongside SPSCC Theatre Collective’s recent productions of [title of show] and The Moors, Jordanna has worked in community theatres including Olympia Little Theatre and Olympia Family Theater. Brennan and Jordanna will be working alongside SPSCC students Sarah Boatwright, Carlile Hawkins, Griffin Landry, Alana Nicholas, and Raessa Patterson.
“Far Away is a poetic and political piece of theatre that allows us to experiment,” said Dr. Lauren Love, Director and Drama Professor at SPSCC. “We've been trying out varied arrangements of playing spaces and audience spaces to create an immersive, contemplative, and impactful experience. We invite all who are interested in talking about that experience directly following the performance. It's always exciting to expand our expectations as artists and I hope we'll bring that to our audiences as well.”
Admission is a suggested $10 donation at the door. More information, including performance dates and times, is available on the college’s Arts & Entertainment page.
