The South Puget Sound Community College (SPSCC) Theatre Collective presents Hurricane Diane at the Kenneth J. Minnaert Center for the Arts Main Stage from Nov. 10 to 19, 2023.
Hurricane Diane by Madeleine George is a contemporary comedy about climate change that combines The Real Housewives of New Jersey and elements of ancient Greek drama. Diane is a gardener with supernatural abilities owing to her true identity, the Greek god Dionysus, who has returned to the modern world to gather followers and restore the Earth to its natural state. She decides that there’s no better place to start than a suburban New Jersey cul-de-sac.
The cast includes Heather Matthews, Kimberlee Wolfson, Meghan Goodman, Andrea Weston-Smart, as well as SPSCC student Anna Holbrook.
Many volunteers helped bring the play to life by building and painting the set and working backstage including SPSCC students Elijah Bellis, Alyssa Calais, Alana Nicholas, and Jack Rogers.
“I’m drawn to plays that address contemporary issues and also entertain,” said Dr. Lauren Love, Director and Drama Professor at SPSCC. “I laughed out loud when I first read this play. It's no small accomplishment to write a comedy about climate change, but playwright Madeleine George has done it. I'm hoping the production will help audience members ease into conversations about choices we make as individuals, communities, and larger societies and instill in them an appreciation for the richness of nature.”
Admission is a suggested $10 donation at the door. SPSCC students, staff, and faculty are free. More information, including performance dates and times, is available on the college’s Arts & Entertainment Calendar.
