South Puget Sound Community College (SPSCC) is excited to introduce its newest coach and team, Clipper eSports, led by Head Coach Michael Nguyen. Nguyen will lead the Clippers into the world of competitive gaming in Fall 2022, and is actively recruiting for the team.
Nguyen brings over 5,000 hours of experience as a competitive eSports player. He got his start in high school where he competed Semi-Pro in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CSGO). In college, Nguyen played for Western Washington University (WWU) and was in the Top 1% of CSGO players (Global Elite Rank). He received his bachelor’s degree in Public Relations Journalism with a minor in Entrepreneurship from WWU in 2019.
Nguyen is looking forward to passing down what he has learned to the next generation of student-athletes in SPSCC’s new eSports Facility, where students have access to PCs, Nintendo Switches, and games like Valorant, Super Smash Bros, and more.
“We’re really looking to include everyone and introduce eSports as an opportunity anyone can pursue,” said Nguyen. “There has been tremendous growth within the professional scene, and now there’s a big gap that’s needing to be filled in terms of pipeline.”
In addition to recruiting for fall, Nguyen is planning a series of summer camps for middle and high school players interested in building collegiate-level skills. There will also be summer camps for international students visiting the US, allowing players to reach a wider audience and expand their networks. More information is available on the college’s eSports page.
Clipper eSports is committed to providing student-athletes opportunities to develop professional pathways through education, coaching, and practice. The team will be dedicated to fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment that continues to evolve with each competition.
