Lucy Gentry-Meltzer
2025 Juror's Invitational

Lucy Gentry Meltzer is a multimedia artist whose passion lies in the transformative power of art as a catalyst for social change and raising awareness. My work is informed by the evolving cultural and political milieu of our times and by a passionate concern for the physical world of our environment.
With a background in costume design and a wealth of knowledge gained from teaching at institutions suchas Brown University and the Evergreen State College, Lucy brings a multidimensional perspective to her artistic endeavors. Her expertise in costume design adds a layer of visual storytelling to her work, enhancing her ability to communicate idea and concepts. Artists and designers who continue to influence her work include: Amy Sillman, Tracy Emin, Franz Kline, and Alexander McQueen.
The subject matter of my artwork is inspired by the current geopolitical climate. I find resonance in Gandi’s “Seven Blunders of the World”, using these enduring concepts as a subtle framework woven into my abstract forms and fragmented structures. These social sins are as prevalent today as they were in Gandhi’s time, motivating my reflection through art.
In my art, I aim to engage viewers beyond the surface, inviting them to explore the layers of narrative and emotion that reside within each piece. As an abstract artist, my work embodies a fusion of raw and honest expressions. I often paint with my own crafted brushes, producing visual gestures and agitated marks. Music, in particular, influences my creative process. Its rhythms and tones evoke visceral responses that I interpret into visual forms, dictating the movements of my brush and the flow of my breath, seamlessly integrating its beat into the fabric of my work.
My artistic journey for this body of work includes creating plaster sculptures, painting the sculptures, and cutting and collaging the fragments into a new cohesive whole. This technique allows layering of history and meaning, allowing the viewer to ponder the origins of each fragment. The new shapes often have a unique skeletal structure, bringing a layered complexity and added depth to the visual narrative, symbolizing chaos and reconstruction.
