Bio:

Born in Lexington MA, April Works graduated with a BA from George Washington University in 1969 and an MBA from The Wharton School in 1976. She spent her career in the corporate world as a CPA and CFO. After retirement she and her husband raised alpacas in Poulsbo WA for 10 years. Although they collected art from their extensive travels, it wasn’t until April moved to a retirement community in 2012 that she designed and made her own art quilts and textile vessels. Many of her works have been accepted into regional and national exhibits.

Artist Statement:

Line, shape and color are the main elements in my textile art. Hand-dyed and commercial fabric offer a unique and endlessly varied medium for achieving interesting texture and a vibrant palette of colors. Hand painting, free motion quilting, hand stitching embroidery and occasionally fusible web also provide the opportunity to add special effects. My work is based on many samples and experiments including free-hand cutting and improvisational piecing frequently resulting in curved and “skinny”/thin lines. I embrace chance, asymmetry and geometry. The goal is to create original textile pieces displayed as wall hangings or as sculptural vessels

Although I am self-taught, the development of my technique, use of media and processes is a result of taking online and in-person classes with other textile artists.  Inspiration comes from nature, other artists’ work or my observations documented in sketchbooks.

2014-2021 Submitted postcards every year to the annual SPSCC Fine Art Postcard Exhibit; my postcard was awarded People’s Choice in 2018.
