I live and work in Olympia, WA, and have been a Professor in the University of Washington School of Oceanography since 1994
I am a figurative artist. I use oil painting and drawing to explore and understand family, friends, past events, and the natural world. For me the most important thing is the time spent actually painting or drawing, allowing the duration of my attention to reveal feelings that only come after looking for a long time. I also make abstract sculptures from steel, wood, and glass. These generally live outside and focus on some aspect of nature, such as gathering rainwater.
