Statement
I strive to capture and express of nature’s beauty and essence with traditional Asian art materials in view of my inner thoughts and emotions. Each stroke of ink brush on rice paper absorbs in unique ways in an art form itself… open to unexpected and gives me the sense of freedom of spontaneous movement. Working ink and rice paper does not allow going back and correcting, but it yields plenty of beauty in imperfectness with satisfying sensation and breathing room. Achieving art of imperfectness is an endless journey and learning process.

Sun Hui Watkins is an artist who works with traditional Asian art materials to explore the beauty and essence of nature. Her creative practice is guided by her inner thoughts and emotions, allowing her to translate the natural world into expressive, contemplative imagery. This spontaneity gives her a sense of freedom and movement, while the medium’s inability to be corrected encourages her to embrace imperfection.
