What is I-BEST?

 

The Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training (I-BEST) program is a nationally recognized program that helps new students take their first steps toward college level classes at SPSCC!

This program provides a team teaching model in introductory-to-lower-division courses throughout all degree pathways at the college. These courses have two instructors who work together to create a dynamic learning environment so that students have multiple ways of learning and understanding the course material. This means that students have the support from two teachers. In addition to this team-teaching model, students are also provided with support from the Adult Learner Transition Specialists in the Transition Studies Department. These specialists offer advising, help with registering for classes, or connecting students to resources both on and off campus. 

The instructor teams work with the Transition Specialists to ensure students are offered personalized support to help them better balance life and school, build the literacy/technical skills needed to earn credentials, get jobs, and become future leaders in their chosen fields.  

I-BEST Programs at SPSCC

You can start this program any quarter. Classes are offered online or in person.

In this program students build English and math skills in pre-college level classes, while also studying in college level classes. This is a full-time, 3-quarter program that leads toward a transfer degree.

Quarter 1

  • CCS 101 Pathways to Success (3 units)- this class is taught by the I-BEST instructor
  • ENGLISH 90-95-98-101 Multi-level English  (5 units) team taught
  • AND choose one math class that fits math placement and pathway:
    • Math 92  (5 units) or
    • CMath107 Math in Society: Math 95, 107 (5 units) team taught or
    • CMath146 Introduction to Statistics: Math 95, 96, 146 (7 units) team taught or
    • AMath141 Accelerated Algebra I: Math 98, 99, 141 (8 units) team taught 

Quarter 2

  • PSYC 116 Psychology of Human Relations: Diversity (5 units) team taught or
  • CMST&210 Interpersonal Communication: Diversity (5 units) team taught
  • ENGLISH 98-101   Multi-level English (5 units) team taught
  • AND choose one math class that fits math placement and pathway:
    • CMath107 Math in Society: Math 95, 107 (5 units) team taught or
    • CMath146 Introduction to Statistics: Math 95, 96, 146 (7 units) team taught or
    • AMath141 Accelerated Algegra I: Math 98, 99, 141 (8 units) team taught 

Quarter 3

  • NUTR&101 Nutrition (5 units) team taught or
  • BIOL&160 General Biology with Lab  (5 units) team taught
  • ENGLISH 98/101 (5 units) team taught or
  • ENG 102 (5 units) this class is not team taught
  • third class is chosen based on individual education plan

In this program, students build their English and math skills in pre-college level classes, while also studying in college level classes.

This is a full-time, 2-quarter program that leads toward a Professional Technical degree. Students may start in this program any quarter.

Quarter 1 (online, hybrid,and in-person schedules)

  • CCS 101 Pathways to Success (3 units)- this class is taught by the I-BEST instructor
  • MATH 101 (5 units) team taught
  • ENGLISH 90-95-98-101 Multi-level English (5 units) team taught

Quarter 2 (online, hybrid,and in-person schedules)

  • PSYC 116 Psychology of Human Relations: Diversity (5 units) team taught or
  • CMST&210 Interpersonal Communication: Diversity (5 units) team taught
  • ENGLISH 95-98-101 Multi-level English (5 units) team taught
  • Third class is chosen based on individual education plan - this class is not team taught

Beginning Automotive Certificate I-BEST program (42-53 units) is a full-time, 3 quarter program that leads to the Beginning Automotive Certificate with the option to continue toward the advanced certificate or degree.

In these classes, students have the support of their Automotive instructor and the I-BEST instructor who is there 50% of the time. The I-BEST instructor helps students build their skills  such as reading, writing, and math while they are studying in the Automotive program. Classes are available in the morning or evening. To earn the Beginning Automotive Certificate, students must be eligible for English 90 and Math 92.

  • AUTO 100 Introduction to Automotive (5 units) team taught
    • Associate degree students may substitute prior learning or training for AUTO 100
  • AUTO 108 Engine I (7 units) team taught
  • AUTO 109 Engine II (7 units) team taught
  • AUTO 112 Intermediate Automotive Electrical Systems(7 units) team taught
  • AUTO 113 Advanced Chassis Electrical (7 units) team taught
  • AUTO 130 Steering and Suspension (7 units) team taught
  • AUTO 131 Brakes (7 units) team taught

Office Coordinator Certificate of Proficiency I-BEST program (42-44 units+ English, math classes as needed)

This is a full-time, 3-quarter program that leads to the Office Coordinator Certificate of Proficiency with the option to continue toward the degree. Students can start in this I-BEST program in Fall or Spring Quarter.

In this program, students have two teachers in their classes; the I-BEST instructor is there 50% of the time. To earn the Office Coordinator Certificate, students must be eligible for English 90 and Math 92.

Quarter 3

  • OFTEC 141 Intro to Excel (5 units) team taught
  • OFTEC 255 Records and Information Mangagement (5 units) team taught
  • OFTEC 260 Business Communication (5 units) team taught

Start working on an Early Childhood Education certificate or degree with the support of two instructors. In these classes, students have the support of their Early Childhood instructor and the I-BEST instructor who is there 50% of the time. The I-BEST instructor helps students build their skills in reading, writing, and math as they study in the Early Childhood Education program. Classes are available online.
