South Puget Sound Community College (SPSCC) presented students Sariah Gaunt and Daichi Iwasaki with the 2026 Outstanding Student Award at this year’s commencement ceremony.
Sariah and Daichi were nominated by staff and faculty to recognize their personal growth, academic achievement, and contributions to the college and community during their time at SPSCC. Each student received a personalized plaque and a $500 scholarship from the SPSCC Foundation.
Sariah Gaunt graduated with an Associate of Arts Direct Transfer Degree with a cumulative GPA of 3.82. After nearly a decade away from school, she returned to SPSCC and rediscovered her confidence, built meaningful connections, and found a strong sense of community. During her time at the college, Sariah worked as a student tutor and volunteered both at the SPSCC Library and at a local food bank. She plans to continue her education by pursuing a bachelor’s degree in mathematics followed by a master’s in education, with the goal of becoming a middle school math teacher.
Daichi Iwasaki graduated with an Associate of Arts Direct Transfer Degree with a cumulative GPA of 3.98, earning high academic honors. Known for his strong work ethic and perseverance, Daichi served as president of the SPSCC Tomodachi Japanese Club and worked as a student Japanese tutor. He leads by example and inspires those around him through his dedication and pursuit of excellence. Daichi also has a passion for film studies and looks forward to continuing his academic journey.
