Join Us in Making the Sound

Your planned gift creates a legacy of opportunity for SPSCC students. With your support, future generations will have access to education that transforms lives and strengthens the Puget Sound region. Contact us at foundation@spscc.edu or call 360-596-5430 to learn how you can make a lasting difference.

A beneficiary designation gift is a flexible and affordable planned gift option. You can name South Puget Sound Community College Foundation as a beneficiary, using any of the following options:

  • IRAs and retirement plans
  • Life insurance policies
  • Donor-advised funds
  • Commercial annuities

Before deciding on the type of legacy gift you want to make, be sure to explore options that best align with your planned giving goals. Contact your broker, insurance agent, or financial representative for assistance in finding the best way to establish a gift plan that is right for you.

How It Works

  1. Request a change-of-beneficiary form from the administrator of your retirement plan, insurance policy, or bank account, or download the form from your provider's website.
  2. Decide what percentage (1 to 100) you would like the South Puget Sound Community College Foundation to receive and name us, along with the percentage you choose, on the beneficiary form. Return the completed form to your provider.
  3. Contact the Foundation. Notifying the Foundation of your plans enables us to support your intentions and plan for the use of your future gift.

Making a bequest in your will or living trust is one way to establish your legacy. You can specify a dollar amount, a percentage of your estate, or give the remainder after all other provisions of the estate have been determined.

Bequest Language

Following are two examples of sample language for bequests.

  1. For an unrestricted gift that permits South Puget Sound Community College to determine the use of funds based on greatest needs:

"I give to South Puget Sound Community College Foundation, a nonprofit corporation currently located at 2100 Mottman Road SW, Olympia, WA 98512, or its successor thereto,___________[written amount or percentage of the estate or description of property] for its unrestricted charitable use and purpose."

  2. To designate your provision for a specific purpose:

"I give to South Puget Sound Community College Foundation, a nonprofit organization currently located at 2011 Mottman Road, SW, Olympia, WA 98512, or its successor thereto,____________[written amount or percentage of the estate or description of property.] This gift should be used for (state purpose) if and so long as South Puget Sound Community College Foundation determines that the need exists. If South Puget Sound Community College Foundation shall determine at the outset or at a later time that the need does not exist, or no longer exists or for some reason it is not possible (or prudent) to administer my gift as originally intended, then South Puget Sound Community College Foundation may, in its sole and uncontrolled discretion, direct the use of my bequest for a purpose related as closely as possible to that stated above."

As a 501c3 nonprofit organization, your donation to the SPSCC Foundation may be tax deductible to the fullest extent allowable. Donations of any size make a difference in the life of a student. SPSCC Foundation's tax ID is EIN # 91-1174940.

Gift Processing Fees

Please note that processing fees apply to certain types of donations. These fees help cover the costs associated with handling your gift and ensure that the maximum amount of your donation supports SPSCC students and programs. If you have any questions about fees, feel free to contact us.

Fee Policy

Gifts to the SPSCCF incur a Processing Fee to support general operating funds. The Processing Fee is assigned at a rate of 5% for all non-endowed restricted and unrestricted donations at the time the gift is received.

Additionally, endowments incur an Endowment Fee at a rate of up to 5% annually on the earnings of the endowment based on a 3-year rolling average. The SPSCCF Finance Committee may recommend to the Board of Directors adjustments to the Endowment Fee based on the value of the fund above corpus at the time the fee is calculated.

Emergency Grants

When a student faces an unexpected financial crisis, even a relatively small expense can jeopardize their ability to continue their education. Emergency grants provide the immediate assistance students need to stay focused on their academic goals rather than having to choose between education and essential needs.

Removing Barriers to Keep Students on Track

With the support of our generous community, the SPSCC Foundation offers emergency grants that help students stay enrolled when unexpected challenges threaten to disrupt their education. These timely funds often make the difference between a student continuing coursework and pausing progress toward earning their degree. Whether it’s car repairs, rent, or utility bills, your support helps students overcome financial hurdles and keep moving toward their goals.

I'm studying to become a paralegal, and my son and I are facing homelessness. I plan to use this support to buy school supplies, a new pair of glasses to help me see and read, and hopefully some clean clothes.

Scholarships

SPSCC Foundation scholarships make tuition affordable and college accessible for students.

Two students in blue graduation cap and gowns smile at the camera

Scholarship Basics

The SPSCC Foundation proudly awards more than 400 scholarships every academic year, helping students pursue their educational dreams. Scholarships help cover a student’s tuition and fees and are awarded through an open application process.

We award two types of scholarships:

Annual Scholarships are a way to make an immediate difference in a student’s life. They are funded by annual donations and vary in amount based on the donation. Each scholarship is fully awarded each year based on donor contributions and provides critical support to students. Whether you want to renew your support annually, offer a one-time scholarship to honor a special occasion, memorialize a loved one, or supplement a scholarship endowment while it matures, annual scholarships give you the flexibility to make an impact right away.

Starting an Annual Scholarship

It takes a minimum contribution of $1,500 to establish a stand-alone scholarship. For smaller donations, you can contribute to our Student Success Scholarship fund, which pools donations to award larger scholarships for students.

Scholarships may be one-time offerings or renewed and awarded annually.

All Foundation scholarships are awarded via an open application process and a standard set of criteria. You may choose to designate your scholarship for a particular field or area of study.

Annual Scholarship Awarding Practices

Contributions to an annual scholarship incur a Processing Fee of 5% at the time the donation is received. All remaining funds will be fully spent as one or more scholarships (per your preferences) in the same fiscal year that we receive them.

Scholarship endowments are sustained by earnings from an invested (endowed) donation. Endowed gifts can be donated all at once or in multiple installments over a few years. Once the endowment is fully-funded and has had time to mature (typically 3-5 years), a portion of the earnings is utilized each academic year to award one or more scholarships.

Unspent earnings remain in the endowment to foster continued growth. The original donated amount, known as the corpus, remains intact and can continue to grow through additional contributions.

Starting a Scholarship Endowment

Scholarship endowments require a minimum contribution of $25,000, payable either in a lump sum or spread over a period of up to five years. After reaching full funding, it typically takes 3-5 years for the endowment to mature and generate enough earnings to fund a scholarship. Once the endowment is mature, a portion of the earnings is withdrawn each year to award as you have directed.

If you want to begin awarding a scholarship right away, you can choose to make an additional contribution to fund annual scholarships while your endowment matures. These additional funds are fully awarded each year and do not contribute to the corpus of your endowment.

Endowment Spending Policies

Once an endowment is mature, our Finance Committee (made up of Foundation Board members) can elect to withdraw up to 5% of the 3-year rolling average of the endowment’s market value for scholarship awarding.

Contributions to an endowment do not incur a fee at the time of the donation. However, endowments incur an annual fee of up to 5% of the 3-year rolling average of the endowment’s earnings.

Scholarships open doors for SPSCC students, easing financial barriers and making education possible. Whether you give annually or create an endowed scholarship, your contribution helps students and strengthens our community. Contact us at foundation@spscc.edu or call 360-596-5430 to learn how to establish a scholarship.

If you are interested in supporting SPSCC scholarships without creating a new scholarship, you can also consider giving to the general Student Success Scholarship Fund.

Student Success Fund: Why Unrestricted Giving Matters

Flexibility for Immediate Impact

When you donate unrestricted funds, you're empowering SPSCC students with the flexibility they need to overcome the unexpected. Whether it's covering tuition gaps, paying for textbooks, or addressing emergency expenses, your contribution ensures that students can stay on track, no matter what challenges arise.

Making Success Possible

Unrestricted funds allow the Foundation to meet student needs in real time. Some of the items these funds support include:

  • Emergency Grants: Helping students navigate sudden financial challenges like medical bills or car repairs.
  • Basic Needs Support: Ensuring students have access to food, housing, and essential resources.
  • Scholarships: Bridging the gap between financial aid and the actual cost of education.
  • Targeted Impact: Flexible funding that meets emerging student and college needs.
  • Operations: Supporting Foundation work that ensures efficient stewardship and maximum impact of donated funds.

Through scholarships, grants, programs, and community events we are working together to sound off for student success and make the Puget Sound region a better place to live, work, and grow!
