After officially launching its Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (BS in CS) degree in 2024, South Puget Sound Community College (SPSCC) is now welcoming new computer science students for the 2025–26 academic year.

The BS in CS program allows students to earn a four-year degree without transferring to another college or university—the entire program is completed at the community college. Designed to be as flexible as possible, the program features hybrid and online classes to accommodate working professionals, caregivers, and non-traditional students.

“Students can enter the program directly from high school or transfer in with a qualifying associate degree to begin upper-division—or 300-level—coursework,” said dean of applied technology Jason Selwitz. “The curriculum is structured to be completed in four years for traditional students, or in two years (six quarters) for those entering at the 300-level.”

Jordan McNair, a student in the program’s first cohort, shared his experience: “I was so excited to find out that SPSCC offered a bachelor’s in computer science, as it meant I didn’t have to leave the community college I had grown so fond of over the years. Because of the program, I was able to continue my valued role at the Start Here Desk, which has been incredibly accommodating of my class schedule. And since the software development associate degree I initially pursued was skills-based and non-transferable, the bachelor’s program provided a wonderful opportunity for me to apply those credits to my continued education.”

This is also a degree pathway for students studying at Grays Harbor College. “Students from Grays Harbor studying in these areas can also transfer seamlessly to SPSCC to complete their bachelor’s degree with us,” added Selwitz. “The hybrid and online model works well for students in Aberdeen and other cities outside of the Olympia area.”

As Jordan and his cohort begin their final year of the bachelor’s degree program, SPSCC is accepting applications for the next cohort of computer science students. To help prospective students get started, SPSCC is hosting virtual information sessions on July 29 and September 3, 2025. Sessions will provide an overview of the program, how to apply to SPSCC, and a chance to connect with program faculty and advisors.
